Don’t skip on suede

Don’t skip on suede

Not to be forgotten, a suede jacket might just be the middleman you’re after for mornings that make you wish you had worn something a little warmer.

If you read my blog post on shackets then the next step on what to wear as the weather turns might be a suede jacket. I will say now that you should actively avoid wearing it when it’s raining, but downpour aside, it is a rather good option for cooler weather and provides more warmth than lighter utility jacket alternatives championed earlier on in the year.

When I think of suede jackets, I think of guys like Marlon Brando who had that panache quality to the way he dressed. Never overdone, but just enough to warrant a second glance and praise from onlookers. In my opinion I feel suede jackets can sometimes be mistaken as something borrowed from your grandad (not always a bad thing) and better left on vintage store rails. It is true that an oversized suede jacket may come across differently - especially those with fringing - but there is way that you can wear them today without feeling like you’ve walked off the set of a western period drama.

Mr P.’s take for example (pictured) is modern in both cut and colour choice. Using a contrast stitch against a rather delightful shade of dusty teal it also comes with over pronounced buttons on the placket and cuffs. There is both hints of 70s Americana diner and modern day co-working space uniform that pushes this suede jacket forward past its vintage counterparts.

It seemed fitting to wear a pair of Scott Fraser Collection classic wide legs to go with the jacket which I think would actually get the Brando’s seal of approval. You only have to look at Scott’s moodboards to see where he got inspiration from for the cut of the trousers that now I come to think of them, I was fitted for underneath a vintage store in Hackney.

On my feet I have kept to Common Projects. New website, same habits. Then there’s the accessory of my Campbell Cole coin pouch which is highly useful when you want to keep your pockets free of cards and reserved for hands when the breeze picks up. And something I did not notice at the time, the pouch nicely ties the outfit together with the trainers. Lots of small details and modern touches that make an outfit like this rather apt for colder and overcast days.jbicon
